In late May 2018, LAW FOR ALL had the privilege of hosting Judge Albie Sachs at the One&Only Hotel in Cape Town.

The eager crowd, which comprised LAW FOR ALL lawyers and esteemed guests, were in awe of the former Constitutional Court judge’s stories of his past and turning points in South Africa’s history.

Judge Sachs played an integral part in forming the South African Constitution. He was appointed by the late Nelson Mandela, who as part of his presidency, assembled the first Constitutional Court. In place since 1996, the Constitution is now often hailed as one of the best in the world and used as an example of fair supreme law around the globe.

Sachs, a well-known activist and acclaimed author as well, also shared insights about his recently released book, Oliver Tambo’s Dream, along with the backstory to his 1991 award-winning book Soft Vengeance of a Freedom Fighter.

The latter chronicles his 1988 car bombing in Maputo, and Judge Sachs shared more about the era that ushered in the beginnings of our South African democracy.

Judge Albie Sachs also participated in a Q&A session, much to the delight of the curious crowd. From land expropriation to the #FeesMustFall movement, Judge Sachs shared his opinions on the current state of the country.

And when it came to giving advice to the aspiring legal minds in the audience, his response was simply, ““Don’t listen to the advice of us!”. He further explains that young legal whizzes need to be as cheeky, challenging and curious as possible, along with finding joy in what they do.

LAW FOR ALL’s Managing Director, Adv. Jackie Nagtegaal, concluded proceedings.

“I think it’s an incredible legacy that he’s left and the platform that younger generations now have to help create the South Africa we dream of,” she maintained.  “I think that’s the important part of the talk today, making sure that younger people realise the role they have to play.”

We were incredibly honoured to host Judge Albie Sachs at this successful event, and wish to thank all those involved in organising it.

Here’s to many more insightful and inspiring events in the future!
